Facilitation skills and competencies
From introductory to advanced level
Why this training?
Facilitation, together with a broad understanding of ‘process, is the key plank on which many other essential skills are based – from consultation to conflict resolution. Good quality facilitation and process skills lead directly to tangible organisational benefits, including increased efficiency and effectiveness, improved relationships between key stakeholders and achieving agreed outcomes.
As participative and consensus-based approaches become ever more common, many public and voluntary sector staff are now asked to ‘facilitate’ meetings, workshops and events as part of their day jobs, but very few are given any or sufficient training to carry out this role effectively. We can help bridge the gap between the demands made on staff and their capacity to deliver.
As facilitation, together with process skills, is such a large topic, we offer tailored training for different audiences, based on their existing experience.
Facilitation: introductory level
The training is tailored to meet the requirements of people who need to use facilitation as part of their ‘day job’. It is suitable for people who have never had any training on facilitation and want a thorough grounding on the basics on which the more advanced work is built. This could include people who have been asked to do facilitation within their job, but have found it a difficult or unsatisfactory experience. This is a one day course, but is also offered as a two day course, where participants have the opportunity to apply the theory and techniques that they have learnt about in a safe, learning-oriented setting.

Facilitation: intermediate / advanced
This day is for people who have some experience of facilitation and have perhaps already received some basic training. The day will explore some of the more demanding areas of facilitation, with the content being decided in relation to the participants’ area of interest and experience. This could include topics such as conflict resolution, consensus building, planning out longer engagement processes, designing events in detail and advanced techniques.
